Any abnormal development that develops from the tissues that make up the spine is referred to as a spinal tumor. Spinal tumors come in a variety of forms, not all of which are cancerous (spinal cancer). The term "primary spinal tumors" refers to those that start in the spine. They make up a small percentage of spinal tumors, are normally benign (noncancerous), and are quite uncommon. Although they typically move to the spine from other parts of the body, malignant tumors can also start in the spine. Spinal tumors that have metastasized to the spine are ones that originated elsewhere in the body. Extradural tumors, commonly referred to as epidural tumors, develop inside the spinal column and may harm the vertebrae but normally do not affect the spinal cord. They frequently reside in the epidural space, which is the region surrounding the dura mater, which covers the spinal cord and protects it. The spinal cord may or may not be affected by intradural tumors, which develop inside the dura. Tumors that develop inside the spinal cord's intramedullary space are called intradural tumors.
