Image Guided Neurosurgery

Any method in which a surgeon performs an operation while viewing live images of the patient's internal organs is referred to as image guided surgery. Typically, a combination of X-rays, computers, and/or other tools is used to create these images. Fluoroscopy was for many years the cornerstone of image-guided surgery. Fluoroscopy creates a real-time X-ray "video" of a process. The tried-and-true method of fluoroscopy is still in use. Yet, there are additional options available to surgeons when they require more than the 2D image of the body afforded by fluoroscopy. They can steer instruments considerably more precisely and in 3D thanks to more recent technologies. A GPS-like system in the operating room tracks surgical tools in various systems, which have numerous trademarked names. When doing minimally invasive spinal surgery, image guided surgery is frequently used. It is also occasionally used during traditional, open surgery. In minimally invasive spinal surgery, the skin is merely lightly punctured. Only the minimal quantity of tissue must be disturbed by specialised devices in order for surgical tools to reach the surgical area.
