One of the most frequent causes of disability and mortality in adults is head trauma. The damage to the brain may be minimal, such as a bump, bruise (contusion), or cut, or it may be moderate to severe, such as a concussion, deep cut or open wound, shattered skull bone(s), or internal bleeding. A wide range of injuries to the scalp, skull, brain, underlying tissue, and blood vessels in the head are together referred to as "head injuries." Depending on the severity of the head trauma, head injuries are also frequently referred to as brain injuries. Children and adults can sustain head injuries from a variety of sources. The most common traumatic injuries are from motor vehicle accidents (automobiles, motorcycles, or being struck by a pedestrian), violence, falls, or as a result of child abuse. Subdural hematomas and brain haemorrhages (called intraparenchymal haemorrhages) can sometimes happen spontaneously.
